Enterprise readiness and multisite
Anyone weighing the Drupal vs WordPress question has seen the evidence move decisively in favor of WordPress.
What rtCamp has built and shipped at enterprise scale
FleetNet Americas
FleetNet Americas, a Cox Automotive company managing over 60,000 service providers, ran on Drupal 9 on Acquia. rtCamp migrated the site into Cox Automotive’s existing WordPress VIP multisite network, delivering approximately 2× improvement in Core Web Vitals.
The site joined a broader consolidation of other Cox Automotive brand websites onto a single WordPress multisite, demonstrating that enterprise multisite can handle new properties without rework.
The Indian Express
The Indian Express serves approximately 80 million monthly users across indianexpress.com, Loksatta, Jansatta, and Financial Express. Already on WordPress VIP, the challenge was development velocity across a multilingual media network.
rtCamp built a monorepo architecture with a unified CI/CD pipeline, with one workflow, multiple site instances, and zero cross-site delays. Editorial teams migrated to Full Site Editing with custom Gutenberg blocks, enabling newsrooms to launch complex layouts for elections and live sports without developer intervention. All code reviews now happen internally in accordance with WordPress VIP enterprise standards.
Private Media
Private Media operates three Australian publications, namely, Crikey, The Mandarin, and SmartCompany, each previously running on separate WordPress VIP infrastructure. rtCamp unified all three onto a single WordPress VIP multisite.
Development costs dropped by roughly 50%. Year-on-year engagement for one publication rose 128% in total clicks and 169% in total impressions. When Private Media acquired Pinstripe Media in July 2025, the new property integrated into the existing multisite with minimal challenges.
OnePress
We built OnePress as a framework for WordPress multisite at scale. It is a methodology for managing multi-brand WordPress portfolios across both native Multisite and orchestrated standalone installations.
A centrally managed Governing Site houses all shared components, templates, and design logic. OneDesign (open-source) synchronizes block patterns and templates from the governing site to every brand site. OneUpdate (open-source) centralizes plugin management, routing updates through CI/CD pipelines via automated pull requests.
Each brand retains its own design tokens, content types, and editorial workflows. The structural patterns are shared, and visual identity diverges by design. Both the Cox Automotive and Private Media consolidations used this architecture. For organizations evaluating whether WordPress multisite can support a governed, multi-brand digital estate, OnePress is rtCamp’s answer.
Examples of multisite success from the broader WordPress VIP ecosystem
- NASA‘s flagship nasa.gov launch moved 68,698 pages and over 104,000 media assets from Drupal. During the April 2024 solar eclipse, the site absorbed one billion requests in four and a half hours while staying performant. This is the most publicly documented enterprise readiness stress test in the CMS space.
- News Corp Australia migrated 90+ brands across 15 web properties to WordPress VIP, an enterprise-grade hosting platform for WordPress. The $5 million project delivered $4.5 million in savings by eliminating licensing and on-premise hardware costs. Publishing tasks dropped from 10 minutes to 3 minutes. Page rendering improved from 27 seconds to 4 seconds.
- Capgemini migrated from Drupal to WordPress VIP: 20,000+ pages in 10+ languages across 38 sites. Their Drupal system had 4 webmasters. WordPress multisite enabled 70 people across 40 markets to manage content independently.
Drupal Multisite, a distant second
The Belgian Federal Police runs 180+ websites on Drupal, and it remains the largest well-documented Drupal multisite deployment on record. Despite being recognized as an enterprise-ready CMS for more than two decades, the Drupal community has not published a larger or more transparent case study highlighting success in a multisite implementation.
The Belgian Federal Police implementation required a full rebuild of its automation pipeline before it reached a workable state, and that approach was purpose-built for this deployment rather than established from a known process.
WordPress VIP handles the complexity
WordPress VIP packages scaling, CDN, monitoring, CI/CD, and security into a single platform starting at ~$25,000/year. Engineering teams at rtCamp have successfully built enterprise WordPress solutions for several Fortune 500 firms and government agencies on WordPress VIP’s infrastructure.
Acquia, the top enterprise-ready hosting provider for Drupal, runs tiers from ~$100,000/year, with Site Factory at $123,000–$394,000/year.
Key takeaway
🏆 WordPress wins on enterprise scale and multisite. NASA’s billion-request benchmark, enterprise deployment of The Indian Express, and WordPress VIP’s Kubernetes infrastructure demonstrate proven readiness at lower cost.
Where Drupal holds ground: The enterprise-ready and Gartner-recognized platform of Acquia works well for solutions that are not affected by limited vendor diversity.
